Old Kitchen Towels

Last May I reported on some old, well-used kitchen towels my daughter-in-law returned to me for mending. I cut off the tattered hems, serged the edges for stability and re-hemmed them. I was thrilled she still wanted them enough to ask me to look at them.

Now the same thing has happened with some of my towels. These green/natural pinwheel towels were the very first run of towels I wove. I looked back through my records to figure out just how old they are and it turns out, no big surprise, I've kept very spotty records. I have my original sample and notes on how to weave them but no date is listed anywhere. I know it's been 20 years but it could be more than that.

These towels were easy to fix. They didn't need to be trimmed or serged. The thread I used to hem them originally is falling apart so they just needed a re-hem. You can see how bright the original colors were inside the hem!

I'm very pleased to know that what I make will last this long. These towels are faded and a bit worn with a little bit of staining but still as useful as ever!
